Capital Campaign: A Permanent Medical Home – A Dream in the Making
In 2005, the Executive Director, Board members and staff recognized the urgent need for improved facilities at the 123 South Alvarado and 2032 Marengo street clinic sites due to consistently heavy client traffic over the previous years and the introduction of expanded service offerings. Driven to continue meeting the organization’s mission of providing quality and affordable healthcare, Clinica Romero applied and received funding for capital improvements from the California Health Facilities Financing Authority.

Renovations to the 2032 Marengo Street clinic proceeded apace and were completed by the end of 2008. Improvements include remodeling to increase the number of medical rooms from four to seven; dental service rooms from two to three; and counseling rooms from nine to 12. The reception area was revamped to improve patient flow, a dental reception room established, and the medical files room capacity was expanded. Updated medical equipment and office administration systems are operational and increasing efficiencies while improving quality of care.
The reconstruction of the Alvarado site began with the transfer of non-medical management and administrative staff to a leased building adjacent to the Marengo Street clinic. With increased space available for client services, remodeling began. Improvements include an expanded registration area, upgrades to the elevator and a more efficient heating and air conditioning system.
During the remodeling process in 2006, the Alvarado building’s owner approached Clinica Romero with the option of purchasing the property, and so emerged the opportunity to have a permanent medical home. Clinica Romero received financing from Promerica Bank and solid local government support. In April 2007, the City of Los Angeles, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) program awarded Clinica Romero $1.5 million for the land acquisition through the auspices of City Councilmember Eric Garcetti with the full support of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
At the time of purchasing the Alvarado site for $2.6 million in September 2007, the S. Mark Taper Foundation awarded Clinica Romero $850,000 toward the capital campaign, which constitutes the largest single private grant in the clinic’s history. Building upon this immediate support, Clinica Romero received additional contributions from both private foundations and public organizations.
